Plug in Hybrid Vehicles Emit Almost as Much as Gasoline Vehicles, Study Reveals

Plug-in hybrid cars produce nearly 5x more global warming emissions than official data show, as per a recent analysis.

Widening Gap In Lab and Real-World Emissions

Data shows that PHEVs emit just one-fifth less CO2 than conventional petrol and diesel vehicles, based on research carried out by a advocacy organization. This differs sharply with lab tests, which suggested a 75% decrease in emissions.

Analysts examined information from in-vehicle energy use monitors of 800,000 vehicles registered in Europe from 2021 and 2023. The team found that actual CO2 output from PHEVs in 2023 were 4.9 times greater than official estimates, increased from three and a half times in 2021.

“Actual CO2 output are rising, while lab-reported emissions are decreasing,” stated a senior researcher involved in the report. “This gap is growing and poses a significant issue. Consequently, PHEVs emit almost as much as petrol cars.”

Primary Reasons Driving the Discrepancy

Researchers linked the majority of the difference to inflated estimates of the “utility factor” – the ratio of kilometers driven in battery power relative to overall distance. They determined that just a quarter of driving was completed in EV mode, while lab assumptions suggested over four-fifths.

Additionally, when operating in EV mode, pollution amounts were significantly higher than official projections. That happened because electric motors were not strong enough to function independently, resulting to combustion motors using gasoline for almost a third of the travel covered in electric mode.

Regulatory and Financial Consequences

According to estimates, the underestimation of PHEV CO2 output allowed several major automaker companies to escape over €5bn in penalties between 2021 and 2023, by falsely easing compliance with European Union average fleet CO2 targets.

Additionally, drivers of PHEVs could spend about €500 more per year in operating costs than would be assumed under laboratory tests.

“The strong claims that automakers like to make about their plug-in hybrid cars are clearly way off the mark,” commented a automotive expert. “Consumers are being misled into believing that by purchasing a PHEV, they are benefiting the environment and cutting money. In reality, PHEVs are little better than standard petrol and diesel vehicles in terms of fuel use, CO2 production, and operating expenses.”

Political Discussion and Automotive Pressure

Plug-in hybrid vehicles have recently been brought back into policy debates as automakers have lobbied the European Union to weaken CO2 standards. A proposed prohibition on sales of new combustion engine cars in 2035 has faced heavy pressure from the automotive sector and resistance from member states with significant car industries.

Some high-level officials have suggested PHEVs as a possible “flexibility” solution to introduce in the regulation.

One external energy policy specialist, who was not involved with the study, called the report a “highly valuable addition” after a long period in which segments of the automotive industry argued there was too little information to accurately evaluate real-world CO2 output.

“The results show, without question, that the gap in lab and real-world PHEV energy use and CO2 output is much, much larger than for petrol or diesel cars,” they stated. “All policy adjustments regarding PHEVs should be implemented with extreme care and in the light of that evidence.”
